Through unique outreach, HVVMG advocating for youth with type 1 diabetes

Medical group creates local alliance open to adults as well

Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group has created a community outreach program to advocate for youth with type 1 diabetes and to proactively address the disorder.

The program acts as a free monthly support group for families in the region who can learn how to better manage care and meet others also struggling with a disorder that affects more than 200,000 children across the U.S.

“We are thrilled to offer this to our community,” said Susannah Meehan, a registered nurse and senior director of Clinical Services at HVVMG.

The next meeting is scheduled May 16.

Unlike type 2 diabetes, which is a health- and obesity-based disorder, type 1 diabetes is an immune disorder. It occurs when the pancreas stops making insulin, a hormone needed in order to get energy from food.

Living with type 1 diabetes can be a constant struggle and a delicate balance, requiring patients to frequently screen their blood-sugar level, inject or repeatedly fill insulin through a pump and cautiously balance insulin doses with eating and daily activity.

It is a serious disorder, but with proper treatment, patients can live long and healthy lives.

HVVMG is conducting these free monthly resource meetings open to children with type 1 diabetes and their families. Adults with type 1 diabetes and their families are welcome too.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, garner valuable resources and connect with others who intimately understand the challenges of the disorder.

Meetings are held at 7 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month and facilitated by HVVMG staff. Each session offers a distinct focus, beginning with the May 16 meeting targeting “label reading and carb counting.”

Additional meetings are scheduled June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.

Sessions are held at HVVMG offices, located at 12370 Hesperia Rd., Suite 13, in Victorville.
