HVVMG fitness trainer earns geriatrics certification
Oliekan’s certification a benefit to High Desert senior community
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5/17/2017
Victorville, CA – Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group fitness trainer Mandy Oliekan recently received an expert rating senior fitness certification from ExpertRating Solutions, a highly specialized geriatrics status that will afford her new resources to better serve the senior community. This certification reflects Oliekan’s vast knowledge and superior ability to help people over the age of 65 live a healthy, happy lifestyle.
Now allowed to work with all seniors, regardless of age and limitations, Oliekan has been given access to various assessment tests, including the Berg Balance Scale which is designed to measure balance of older adults in a clinical setting, and Tinetti assessment tools which are task-oriented tests that measure gait and balancing abilities. These evaluation tools help Oliekan accurately gauge where seniors should be placed in their training as well as the level of intensity of their sessions.
“The more knowledge I carry and I can share with the seniors and help them understand what’s going on in the aging process, the better off my clients will be,” Oliekan said.
Specializing in care and prevention of sports injuries, type 1 and type 2 diabetes and training methods for Parkinson’s disease, Oliekan works with seniors to help them live independently without assisted living, manage their depression and stress, and prevent falls.
“I don’t see it as a job,” Oliekan said. “I see a need to help our elderly community. There’s a lot going on with the body physiologically and physically, and having an understanding what your client’s body is going through at this age affects their ability to handle training.”
After receiving her medical assisting degree at Bryman College in 2003, Oliekan was first introduced to the fitness industry in 2006 and was later certified as an Administrative Medical Assistant in 2014.
Seeing a need to help the senior community, Oliekan dedicated countless hours to studying and furthering her education to “help others change their lives in a positive way.”
“I chose to get certified as a senior fitness trainer to better serve my elderly community and it helps me become a well-rounded and educated trainer for all levels of age and fitness,” Oliekan said.
For the last three years, Oliekan has served as the fitness director for the Fit-Sician program at Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group, helping members with diabetes and COPD live healthy lifestyles through diet and exercise. She also teaches group exercise classes, as well as Fitness 101 at 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. Fridays.
