Mavs open homestand with win

Daily Press

The High Desert Mavericks scored five runs before the Modesto Nuts got on the board and went on to win 7-5 to open their homestand on Monday.

Zach Cone notched three hits, including a double, and walked once while scoring twice for the Mavericks. Ryan Cordell hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot off of Johendia Jiminian (0-3, 8.38 ERA) to lead off the bottom half of the first inning.

High Desert (9-10) starter Frank Lopez (2-1, 3.52 ERA) pitched seven innings, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits while striking out three. Lopez did not allow a walk, but Raimel Tapia struck for a two-run, two-out homer in the fifth — part of a three-run frame for the Nuts.

Modesto went on to tack on a run in the seventh and again in the ninth, but the Mavericks managed to hold on to get close to the .500 mark.

Felix Carvallo pitched the final two-innings to earn his second save of the year as he struck out three while allowing one run on two hits.

Seven Mavericks had hits in the win, which came on the heels of a double-header sweep of the 66ers on Sunday. The three-game win streak ties the Mavs’ longest of the young season, as High Desert previously swept Lake Elsinore in three games.

Harrison Musgrave (2-1, 3.14 ERA) will get the start for Modesto on Tuesday. The left-hander has 14 strikeouts in 14 1-3 innings for the Nuts. He will be countered by Luis Parra (0-2, 5.93 ERA) who is looking for his first win of the season. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
