How to Create and Keep a Goal

Physical Activity Keeps Brain Regions That Benefit From Exercise Young

Are you ready to transform yourself in this new year but are unsure how to do so? Setting and achieving goals can be difficult, but it does not mean its impossible! Here are some tips on how to reach your goal.

  1. Identify the goal(s) you want to accomplish.

This may seem obvious, but it’s very important to maintain both focus and motivation. Narrowing it down to 3 or less major goals will allow you to devote appropriate time and energy toward them.

  2. Break your goal(s) up into steps.

As the self-help author, Robert Collier said, “success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” Nothing happens overnight. If your goal is to eat healthier this year, you could start with working on portion control, replacing processed foods with fresh, and eating more fruits and vegetables on a daily basis

  3. Don’t go it alone.

Whether it’s someone striving for the same goal or simply a friend or loved the one you trust, sharing your journey with others will help you stay strong and makes you more likely to cross the finish line. Words of encouragement and helpful tips from your support circle can be highly beneficial, and they’ll help motivate you when you can’t seem to motivate yourself.

  4. Have patience.

Studies show that on average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes a habit. However, this can vary greatly depending on the behavior, the person and the circumstances. Unrealistic expectations or pressure can cause you to feel like a failure and add to the likelihood that you do not accomplish your goal(s). If you do slip up, simply learn from your mistake and develop new strategies for getting back on track.

  5. Maintain or grow your accomplishments.

Achieving a goal is an unbelievable feeling; however, if someone loses 30 pounds only to gain it all back 6 months later, did they really accomplish anything? Sometimes maintaining a goal can be as or more difficult than accomplishing it. Keep reminders of the time and energy you put into achieving your goal, lean on your support circle, and/or expand on the accomplished goal.
