People like Maria Comacho
Maria Camacho used to be frustrated by the difficulty in simple tasks like tying her shoes or walking up a flight of stairs without losing her breath. She had to say ‘no’ to her children when they asked to do fun physical activities together as a family. A little more than two years ago, Camacho decided enough was enough — something had to be different. “I was a couch
potato and I knew I needed to make a change,” she says, “and Heritage LifeFit helped me make that change.”Camacho found motivation in her children and others, recalling the adage that to change one’s life required altering one’s mindset. But despite the support, she knew that until she believed she could do it, she wouldn’t be able to. So each morning, she would repeat words of affirmation: “I could do this, I could do this. I’m a lot stronger than what I think I am.”
That was in January 2016, the beginning of her journey. Since then, she has lost 35 to 40 pounds and has never felt better. She actively participates in Heritage LifeFit obstacle course-style runs, Super Saturdays and Bam Jams. She describes her own progress as once unthinkable yet now realized. “Getting fit is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself,” she says. “Once you walk through those Heritage doors, you feel like you can do anything.”
The transformation from sofa-sulking to a newfound sky’s-the-limit attitude wasn’t necessarily always easy, Camacho adds, noting that she felt early discomfort in physical activities because she wasn’t the fastest of runners. But she also takes pride now in swapping out one element where she did feel comfort — food — with something brand new. “Now I work out for comfort,” she says with a wide, contagious grin on her face. She says she has made new friends too, which she suggests isn’t as easy for an adult, and feels an overwhelming amount of energy these days while adding years to her life. “I used to be the chubby one who didn’t want to get out of the house, out of her comfort zone, and Heritage LifeFit changed my life dramatically,” she concludes. “Just by walking through those doors, meeting fantastic people, wanting to improve my fitness, has helped me a lot.”
