Rachel Dillinger BSN, RN, CDE

Several decades ago, patient education was merely handing out pamphlets or leaving flyers in the waiting room. However, the Internet, social media, and rapidly developing technologies have changed the access patients have to medical information which has led to an increased need for more detailed health education. As healthcare professionals, we are constantly looking for the best ways to reach people, provide education and help people manage their conditions effectively and safely. After I graduated from college with a biology degree, I went to work in clinical research as a coordinator for a large hospital in Dallas. It was in that role I began to realize I truly loved taking care of people, teaching and encouraging them, and looking out for their best interest. As a nurse educator, my goal is that patients grow and learn to take control of their health and well-being while having fun and knowing that our team is running alongside, cheering them on. I love having the opportunity to reach out to patients, teach them something they may not know, and encourage them to keep going, take control of their life, and have some fun while doing it! If life didn’t make you work, I would just travel the world in a tiny home with my family! Traveling is very rejuvenating for me. I get to see how others live their life, think about my personal and professional goals, relax and unwind, and try all kinds of tasty food! When I’m not at work, you can find me at the gym, doing anything outside, relaxing with my family, or planning our next trip.

Fitness and diet have long been integral and important aspects of overall health. I just have to find ways to incorporate them that work for each patient. When patients join my classes or come to one-on-one sessions, it is more than just a health education visit. I want to get to know them, understand their background, what motivates them, and how I can fit into the picture. It is my hope that I become a true resource for my patients and their support team and that together, we can make a healthier and happier patient. If things aren’t going in the direction the patient hoped, it is important to me that we revisit that or the follow through is not likely to be as successful. Between the fitness center and wellness programs, educational opportunities, community involvement, and other member benefits, HVVMG really wants people healthy and happy. You would be hard-pressed to find another medical group placing such high emphasis on and providing immense support for preventative care as HVVMG does. To work in an organization which is loyal to the cause, even if the going gets tough, inspires me to keep up my end of the bargain by motivating and growing my patients.
