Naoko Nagaya, RD

What excites me most about my field today is that food can be an art form, medicine or science. The nutrition field is still relatively new and I enjoy new findings every day. Dietitians are often stereotyped as judging people for not eating healthy, but we enjoy all types of foods. I do eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but I also eat fried foods and desserts. I just try to eat everything in moderation. It is important that you smile while you’re eating food and enjoy every texture and flavor.

I fell in love with nutrition when I took my first class in college – Nutrition for Culinary Chefs. I first thought about becoming a dietitian when I worked in a small, acute care hospital as a Dietetic Technician, Registered, and learned what a dietitian can do for a community and for very sick people. Registered Dietitians are trained to provide the most appropriate information to the public based on evidenced-based research and there are always new findings and updates in the field of nutrition. If I wasn’t a Dietitian, I would be a food scientist. In my free time I like to travel and listen to music.

My focus is to bring different teaching methods to share alternative nutrition therapy to my patients. I study all kinds of medical nutrition therapy so I know what they will go through and I’m always learning new things from them along the way. It is a wonderful feeling when we can move our body and enjoy eating colorful foods without any restrictions, and I think maintaining regular exercise and good eating habits are keys to your overall well-being. But if you ever wonder if your eating behavior is well-balanced or if you have a concern about your meal intakes, it’s not a bad idea to stop at the dietitian’s office. I treat all my patients like family and do my best to help them with their needs as much as I can.

“My focus is to bring different teaching methods to share alternative nutrition therapy to members,” she says. “I want all of us to enjoy leaning nutrition and stay healthy.”
