Urgent Care, Internal Medicine
What excites me most about my field today is the push for preventative care and health measures. Quality physicians do as great a job at preventing diseases as they do treating them. Fitness, nutrition and diet are an integral part of a patient’s health and should be seen as prescriptions that everyone should get. It’s amazing how much healthier we can be if we just start to exercise and eat better, and one of my proudest moments was when I was able to help a patient get off 90 percent of his medications safely by promoting diet and exercise!
I first thought about becoming a medical provider when I was in college and had the privilege of going on a mission trip to Mexico. Even with our limited supplies and the little we were able to do, I saw the joy it brought to the patients’ faces and I’ve been hooked ever since. I decided to go into family medicine because I couldn’t see myself being restricted to one particular field for the rest of my life. I love that I am able to help anyone who walks through our doors or send them to the appropriate provider if higher-level care is needed. If I wasn’t a doctor, I probably would have gone to culinary school to be a chef or pastry chef. Cooking is so therapeutic for me and I love the way food transcends all boundaries and brings people together. In addition to cooking and baking, in my free time I love going fishing and spending time with my family.
My patients always remind me why I chose this career. I love hearing their stories, learning about their cultures, laughing with them and giving them big hugs when they need one. I also love teaching and talking with my patients. I believe education is an integral part to one’s health and I don’t want any of my patients walking out of the room unsure about why they’re taking a certain medication or about the general aspect of their disease process. My job is to make sure they feel listened to and understand our treatment plan, and that they know I’m going to do everything I can in order to provide the best care possible for them.
