If you’re like millions of other adults, you probably wake up early, snooze your alarm, then rush through your morning while hoping you aren’t late to work. And if you have kids, you can only imagine the idea of getting in just a few minutes to yourself before the chaos begins.

Health Education: The Importance of Establishing a Routine

Establishing a routine helps you take advantage of your morning hours, which can set you up for success throughout the day. A study published in the Harvard Business Review found that morning people are more productive and proactive. As such, it’s important to utilize morning time to get organized and maintain that energy throughout the day. Setting and sticking to a morning routine will also help relieve your stress and anxiety, according to research from the American Psychological Association.

Now that you know how important it is to establish a morning routine, here are some practical steps to incorporate into your routine.

Stop Snoozing!

Designate a wake-up time and stick to it. If you have kids, you’ll probably want to wake up a bit before they get up (although that’s easier said than done) so that you have a few minutes to take care of “adult” things before tending to their needs.

Time Out

It’s important to take a few minutes for yourself first thing each morning. This isn’t the time to pay the bills or sign the kids’ permission slips. Think, meditate, journal, pray—do whatever it takes to focus your thoughts and gain direction for the day. Bonus points for sitting outside in the natural early morning sunlight!

Get Up and Move

Incorporate physical fitness into your wake-up routine. Whether it’s a full workout or taking the dog for a brisk walk around the block, a little exercise will get your blood flowing.

Eat Up

When it comes to your health, education is key, and knowing the food to eat to start your day will make a big difference in your energy level. It’s true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so there’s no excuse for skipping! Opt for something protein-rich, like eggs, combined with some fruits or veggies (local California strawberries are unbeatable!) to set the tone for the day.
